Free caller ID you can actually trust
Most caller ID apps rely on strangers tagging numbers. We don’t. Every business number in Who’s Calling has been checked before it ever appears on your screen.
1. UK business listings
We start from public listings of UK businesses – shops, surgeries, garages, trades, offices.
2. Checked on their own website
A number is only accepted when it matches the one the business publishes on its own website.
3. Additional identity checks
Where available, we use additional public information to strengthen the business identity match.
You see exactly who it is
When a number on our verified list calls, Who’s Calling shows the business name, what kind of business it is and roughly where – with a green Verified UK business badge.
No more ignoring the dentist, the garage or the delivery firm because you didn’t recognise the number.
You get a clear warning
If a number isn’t in your contacts and isn’t a verified business, you’re told so – straight away. If the caller claims to be your bank, HMRC or the police, that’s your cue to hang up and call back on a number you trust.
Your call history makes sense
Missed a call? Your recent calls show the business name, so you know whether it’s worth ringing back.
- Your contacts never leave your phone
- We only look up numbers you don’t have saved
- No crowd-sourced tags, no uploading your address book
Let us answer the numbers you don’t know
With call screening on, calls from numbers that aren’t in your contacts are passed to Who’s Calling instead of ringing out. We answer, ask who they are and why they’re calling, and send you what they said as text.
Unknown number calls
Someone who isn’t in your contacts rings you.
We answer for you
The caller is told they’ve reached a call-screening service and asked their name and reason for calling.
You read it
What they said is turned into text and sent to your phone.
You decide
Call back if it’s genuine. Ignore or block it if it isn’t.
A screened call
You see the time, the number and exactly what the caller said. If the number also matches a verified business, you’ll see that too.
Scammers rarely leave a message they’d want read back. Genuine callers – the surgery, the school, the delivery driver – do.
Why use Guardian?
Scammers rely on catching people alone and rushing them. Guardian gives you a second pair of eyes: someone you trust can see when an unknown caller was screened, the caller’s number and the caller’s screening message as text.
Protect yourself
Choose a son, daughter, partner or friend as your Guardian.
- They get an alert and can read what the screened caller said
- They can ring you in one tap if the message looks suspicious
- They never see your contacts, messages or normal calls
- Add up to 5 Guardians, and turn Guardian off or remove one whenever you like
Protect someone else
Worried about Mum, Dad or a relative living alone?
- Send them a request from your own phone, wherever you are
- Nothing is shared until they accept
- You can read what the unknown caller said during screening
- Being someone else’s Guardian is free
Two minutes to switch on
Open Guardian in the app and tap Set up Guardian – or Protect someone else to look after a relative.
Your normal Who’s Calling screening works whether Guardian is on or off.
They accept – knowing exactly what they’ll see
Every invitation spells out what a Guardian can and can’t see, and reminds people to only accept someone they know and trust.
Your Guardian can check in straight away
They see that a call was screened, when it happened, the caller’s number and a transcription of the caller’s screening response. If it looks suspicious, there’s a big Call button so they can check you’re OK straight away.
Choose the protection that suits you
Free identifies known businesses. Call Screening handles unknown callers. Guardian adds a trusted person who can see the screened caller’s message and check in.

Frequently asked questions
Is Who’s Calling really free?
Yes. Verified UK business caller ID is the Free tier. Call Screening is the next level, and Guardian is the highest level of protection and includes Call Screening. If someone invites you to be their Guardian, receiving those Guardian alerts is free.
Where does your business number data come from?
We start from public UK business information and verify telephone numbers against the business’s own website. Where available, additional public information is used to strengthen the identity match.
Do you upload my contacts?
No. Your contacts stay on your phone. We only look up numbers you don’t have saved.
Will my family and friends get screened?
No. Anyone in your contacts rings straight through as normal. Only numbers you don’t know are screened.
What does a Guardian see?
That a call was screened, when it happened, the caller’s number and the caller’s screening response as text. Guardians do not see your contacts, messages or normal calls, and they do not receive transcripts of your normal conversations.
Can I set up Guardian for my mum or dad remotely?
Yes. Send them a request from your phone. Nothing is shared until they accept on their own phone, and they can turn it off at any time.
Do my Guardians have to pay?
No. Guardian is a protection tier for the person being protected, but the people they invite can receive Guardian alerts and act as their Guardian for free.
Which phones does it work on?
Who’s Calling is available for Android phones from Google Play.
