How UK area codes work

They show where a line was issued

An area code tells you the dialling area a landline number was created for. It doesn’t prove where the caller is today.

Calling from abroad

Drop the leading 0 and add +44 – so 01388 becomes +44 1388, and 020 becomes +44 20.

Local doesn’t mean safe

Scammers often fake local-looking numbers. If a caller asks for money or security details, hang up and call back on a number you trust.

How many UK area codes are there?

There are around 750 UK geographic dialling codes listed here. Most start 01; London, Southampton and Portsmouth, Coventry, Northern Ireland and Cardiff use 02 codes.

Why are some area codes longer than others?

Big cities have short codes so more digits are left for local numbers – 020 for London, 0161 for Manchester. Smaller places have five-digit codes such as 01388, and a few have six digits.

Do I need to dial the area code for a local call?

From a landline in the same area you can usually leave the area code off. In some areas – and from mobiles – you always need to dial the full number including the area code.

Can a caller with my local area code be a scammer?

Yes. Caller ID can be faked, and scammers often display local-looking numbers because people are more likely to answer. Check the full number before trusting it.

Got a missed call from a number you don’t know?

Check it to see the area, the original provider, whether it’s a verified business, and what others have reported.
